The modern metropolis of San Francisco has a long history that precedes its current cultural dominance; one involving a famous gold rush and many infamous fires. Beginning in the early 20th century, this American city also became a sanctuary for the gay community.
Then & Now looks to contrast the past with the present. The black and white photographs showcase structures significant to this history or relevant ideas rooted in yesterday. The color of the contemporary serves to differentiate where we were with where we are. While discrimination based on sexual orientation is still a reality for much of the world (including parts of our country) and transgender rights are still decades behind the rest of our populace, the social strides made because of brave women and men should not be discounted.
